Here Come the 123s

They Might Be Giants have always been known for their goofy irreverent humor in their pop songs, so it was a natural progression that the duo start making albums intended for kids.  But as with every good quality kids entertainment, adults can enjoy it as well.

Their most recent album is Here Come the 1-2-3's, a sequel to Here Come the ABC's from a couple of years ago.  Where I found the ABCs album to have a few too many 'easy throwaways', the 123's album hits the mark more often than it misses.  Lots of songs that are fun and smart, even if you already know how to count.

It's funny too, because I didn't enjoy their last album The Else very much, as I found their trademark quirky style to be too self-aware (a problem they've been having some time now).  However, the pretense seems to be missing on this album, and they don't worry so much about  being clever, and just write catchy material.  Perhaps it's the lack of expectation from a young audience.

And yes, the music is good enough for parents to enjoy it, and not feel like they are exposing their offspring to something that will make their brain turn to cheese.  There are a couple of numbers that you'll want to skip, but for the most part it's better than a lot of kiddie fair today.

It also comes with a DVD, with great animations that totally make the music come alive.  Highly recommended for any parents that want to get their kids listening to music beyond Barney.

The band are also giving away free podcasts of some of the videos, so you can try before you buy.
